Is it Time to Stop Believing in a Physical Resurrection of Jesus?

Image
Are Christians crazy for believing that Jesus physically rose from the dead? Each and every Easter, we are faced with the claim that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. That is if you can get past all the fluff of Easter bunnies and Cadbury Eggs. Beyond the commercialized and secularized version of "Easter" is the true Easter. The real reason why we celebrate each Spring. But I think the question of “Is an actual resurrection of Jesus the best possible explanation for the claims of the apostles that Jesus historically and physically rose from the dead?" should be explored. Skeptics and believers should wrestle with this question. Because as the apostle Paul wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless” (1 Cor. 15:14). So is an actual resurrected Jesus the best explanation for the claims of the apostles? Let’s look quickly at the many possibilities and let us all be willing to follow truth to wherever it leads. Th...

Strengthen Your Faith Through Doubt with 3 Powerful Actions

Image
Have you ever asked the question "Why?" Why did this have to happen? Why can't there be another way? Have you asked questions like this, but never received an answer? Well, join the club. (Watch the Sermon by clicking here: If I were God... " It was the summer of 2013 when I met Mike Moyles. Mike was an officer in the US Air Force and a fellow grad student at Biola. Mike has to be one of the smartest people I know. While at Biola, he was working on his fifth master’s degree and when we graduated he was working on his sixth. A brilliant person. Apart from his intelligence, something else stuck out to me about Mike. It was over one of our lunch breaks during residency, I had to ask Mike a loaded question. I said, “Mike, I don’t mean to pry, but you have a prominent scare on your head. In fact, it’s a scar that my son Landon has. What happened?” Mike was unshaken by my bold question, because it was a story he had shared many times before. Mike disclosed that h...

Is Jesus the Archangel Michael?

Image
In week one, we looked at the Jehovah's Witnesses' claim that  Jesus was the "created one ." Last week we carefully examined their claim that Jesus was "lesser than the father."  So far both claims have fallen flat. This week we wrap up our examination of JW's beliefs. This week we'll look at the JW's claim that Jesus is actually the Archangel Michael. Let's see how this claim holds up. The WS teaches that Jesus was and is the archangel Michael. Jesus ceased to be Michael when He was born as a human. After Jesus died, He was raised up as Michael the archangel again. [1] The WS states, “Jesus Christ, whom we understand from the Scriptures to be Michael the archangel.” [2] JWs teach Michael was the first “spirit-son” of God. He was created by God. God created other spirit-sons through Michael. The WS write, “However, by virtue of his being the sole direct creation of his Father, the firstborn Son was unique, different from all others of ...

What To Do When Life Throws You a Curveball

Image
Proverbs 19:21 says "Many are the plans in a man's heart; but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." This is why I strive to not cling onto my plans too tightly. This week I was delivered unexpected information. Life changing. I have told hundreds and hundreds of people "Today is normal and tomorrow your son has cancer. Today is normal and tomorrow you are raising your kids by yourself. Today is normal and tomorrow you hit the jackpot." It was one of those weeks for this guy. I am still sorting out the event. But a good friend ask me "What changed about  you  from last week till now?" The answer: Nothing. I am still me with the same skills, abilities, experiences, degrees, etc. It is only information that has changed. Thank you, Tom. Having said all this I have taken advice given very seriously about dealing with unexpected events. The next time life throws you a curveball try these 5 steps. Don't panic.  Where's The Hitchh...

Detection of Design

Before I dive into teleology, let me blog briefly on the detection of design to expound on my last blog: The Case for Intelligent Design. It is first important to know what design means, as well as a way for design to be detected. The term “design” means the “purposeful arrangement of parts.” Imagine you were at Grand Central Station in New York. You walked into the main hall and it is very busy. People are rushing to catch their train. Others are stopping to grab coffee.  Over in the corner is a man selling magazines and newspapers. You look down to check the time. You look up and you see a woman motionless, apparently frozen.  You scan the room and see more than a dozen more motionless. This goes on for over a minute. You stare in amazement by this.  Another minute goes by and they all go back to their activities. In an instant they are freed from their paralysis.  Then from the balcony above you hear clapping and a loud “Great job everyone!” You ask a woman wh...
