Pay Attention! 3 Reasons to Put Away Your Phone

Image
Yesterday I stopped in at a local store and noticed a common event. A little girl about 9 years old was attempting to talk to her mother about a couple of topics. One might think her mother was dead, because no matter how many times the girl asked for the mother’s response, she didn’t even flinch. Why? She was locked in on her smart phone. So her daughter gave up. I wanted to shout, “Pay attention!” You’ve no doubt experienced this familiar scene. Perhaps you’ve been a participant in this scene. Though this blog is written for parents, it applies to us all. So... I want to briefly share three reasons to pay attention. Three reasons to put aside your phone and pay attention to your children and the life around you.  Your time is limited. If you’re a parent, you need to pay attention. Your time is limited with your kids. If you’re a young parent you think you have forever. If you’re a mid-life parent you are feeling the reality. If you’re an empty-neste

The Attack on Truth

If you knew the truth, would that change your mind? I wonder how many of us would answer honestly. Some would just ask, "What is truth?" Pontias Pilate asked that question to Jesus two thousand years ago. If someone asked me, "What is truth?", I would answer “Truth is that which corresponds to reality. In other words, truth is an accurate picture of the way a thing is. This is exactly what Merriam-Webster would say. [1] So what? Unless you’ve been locked away from the world, you know there is a fiery battle happening right now in the U.S. Senate regarding Supreme Court Justice Nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The debate, one might assume, is whether or not Kavanaugh is innocent or guilty of alleged crime(s). The debate one might say is whether or not the claims of alleged victims are true or false.  But at a closer examination, the debate isn’t over truth, but rather desire. There is an attack on truth. Why do I suggest such a thing? Because regar

Verses to Know God

For a sermon on Jonah 3, Can I Get A Witness?, we concluded that God desires the lost to be saved. As His child, He has called you to be a witness for Him. This can be intimidating and honestly scary if we look at evangelism incorrectly. Evangelism is simply what I call every day outreach.  God has called us to engage in everyday outreach. Going to the places we go naturally. Interacting with the people we naturally interact with. Living each day with gospel-intentionality. Everyday outreach is fun because we know that God does the saving. He simply asks us to bring His Word - His gospel because it is the power unto salvation. Will you as His follower bring His Word to the lost? How? Two easy ways: First, invite them to church. Walking into a church you don't know is intimidating, but coming to a service with a friend is always easier. Second, give them God's Word by getting them into the Bible. Here is a document that you can easily share with people: "Check it

Can Christians Be MEGA SURE of God's Existence - Part 2

Image
In the last blog , we asked the question "Why is there something rather than nothing." Many atheists would say it just is. It's a brute fact. Christians say, "God" is the reason there is something rather than nothing. Regardless of the answer as to why there is something (us, the earth, the universe), we all should ask the question "is our answer reasonable?"  As I just stated Christians claim God is the reason there is something. Last week began to laid out 1 of 2 lines of evidence that show Christians can be MEGA SURE that God exists. We looked at the acronym MEGA to provide scientific rationale for our belief in God. In this blog, I will look at how we can be SURE in our second line of evidence. The second line of evidence for God’s existence is called the Cosmological Argument. Simply put, the cosmological argument is the argument for causation. In other words, every effect must have a cause.Professor and apologist, William Lane Craig has c

Can Christians Be MEGA SURE of God's Existence? Part 1

Why is there something rather than nothing? Have you ever considered this question? Why is there something rather than nothing? Why are we here? Why is the earth here? Why is the universe here? Why is there something rather than nothing. Every world view has to answer these questions. Not just the Christian. Not just the theist, but the pantheist, the polytheist, the agnostic, and the atheist. We all must try to determine why there is something rather than nothing. Once one gives an answer, they need to answer one more question: is my conclusion the most reasonable answer. Atheist philosopher Bertrand Russell who said that “The universe is just there, and that's all." In other words, it just exists. It always had. It’s a brute fact. Is this reasonable? As Christians we would say “God” is the answer. But is that the most reasonable answer. Some would say, it doesn’t matter. It’s a matter of faith. But I ask you, is such a blind faith badge of honor for us as Christians? The
