How Can You Believe in a God That You Can't See?
A common objection from skeptics and atheists is the denial to believe in a God in which you can't see. At face value, it is a fair question, but does it hold up to other beliefs in things unseen?
I think it's first important to establish that just because something cannot be seen, does not mean it does not exist. We believe in electrons, wind, black holes, and gravity yet we cannot see them. If tomorrow I decided that gravity didn't exist and therefore I walked off the top of a building, my disbelief in gravity would prove me wrong.
Remember the words of the apostle Paul in Romans 1:20, "God's invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly understood fro what has ben made, so that men are without excuse." I just last night watched the birth of my son, Gracen Zacharias. One minute he was in my wife's womb, swimming in liquid and being fed from a chord from within her. The next minute he breathes his first breath of air. He then looks for a breast to nurse. Instantly his body works in a whole new fashion. How could I possibly see the immense complexity of my son and how his body naturally works, and not posit he was created by a creator? If I came upon a watch, I wouldn't say "amazing how this watch just appeared. No one created that!" That would be foolish.
King David even wrote of God's order and design, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands" (Psalm 19:1). You see, I look walk outside and look up at the stars. I look at an article talking about the way the solar system works. There is no way I can look at these proofs of design and specific placement of things and events and not posit a grand designer.
"Someone once said that if you sat a million monkeys at a million typewriters for a million years, one of them would eventually type out all of Hamlet by chance. But when we find the text of Hamlet, we don't wonder whether it came from chance and monkeys. Why then does the atheist use that incredibly improbable explanation for the universe? Clearly, because it is his only chance of remaining an atheist. At this point we need a psychological explanation of the atheist rather than a logical explanation of the universe." ~ Peter Kreeft
Lastly, God has physically manifested Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. Listen again to the words of Paul. "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:5-7). "In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form" (Colossians 2:9). This was the supreme revelation.
God has revealed Himself in creation, in the form of a man, and continues revealing Himself in the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. How has God revealed Himself to you?
