Did Jesus Have a Wife?

Enjoy this article by Gary Manning Jr. in response to the new gnostic fragment regarding Jesus' alleged wife.

According to an article in the Washington Post, an ancient manuscript claiming that Jesus had a wife has just been discovered. I’ll tackle this new discovery with some Q&A.

What is this new find?

Karen King, the Gnostic scholar who published the manuscript, has titled it the Gospel of Jesus’ Wife (see the scholarly article here). It is a very small fragment, only 12 partial lines, of an ancient Gnostic book. The fragment, written in Coptic, dates from the fourth century, but it is a copy of an older book, perhaps written in the late second century. According to the fragment, Jesus refers to “my wife.”

First, let me apologize for my tardiness! I recently was on a missions trip for two weeks and starting my final undergrad class. But I am glad to be blogging again! Today, I want to keep it brief. It is the Easter season. This is the time we remember the triumphant work of Jesus Christ. Christ took on Himself the sin of humanity. The sinless lamb was slain. But that is not where it ends. Can You Trust the Bible?

Can you trust the Bible? That's a legitimate question. Is the Bible true? Isn't it just a bunch of stories? These are common questions Even I have asked these questions. I will tackle this topic over the next 2 weeks. This week I will look at the integrity of the New Testament. Next week I will look at the historical reliability of it. So, how do we test the integrity of the New Testament. 3 main questions are used when looking at ancient texts: 1) How many manuscripts have been discovered? 2) What are the dates of the manuscripts? 3) How accurate are the copies? How many manuscripts have been found? Obviously, the more copies the better. This allows comparison to restore the original text. We have many English versions of ancient writings: Homer's Iliad, the writings of Sophoclies , Aristotle, Caesar, and Plato. There are 643 ancient manuscripts of Homer's Iliad !
